Hey! I am Holly and i have created this blog for my English class at Western Michigan University. I am currently and Elementary Education major with history, language arts and early education minors. I am excited to be at Western and i cant wait to see what other people will post on my site!
Here are some more articles I found interesting about the war in Iraq.
So I was on http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/16/iraq.poll/ browsing all of the current news articles and it said that War Support is at a low right now, which really didnt surprise me since we have been at war for a few years now. The article says that only 34% of people support the war on 64% are agianst it. Personally, I think that everyone is getting sick of hearing, seeing and being apart of this war but deep down we all know its just going to continue for years to come as we invade other lands.
After reading the "War Prayer" I could see what was said when they believed the author to be a lunatic. There were so many times when he contradicted himself or just plain did not make any sense to me. He was saying stuff about the men and praying for them but then he would start another prayer that was the complete opposite. It was confusing and amuzing.
It was interesting because I started reading "Shooting an Elephant" and I realized that I had already read it somewhere. I think it was in my humanities class in 11th grade. So it was interesting to read it agian. I felt that this was very relevant to the war discussion we had on Tuesday. It went along with the whole idea that sometimes people have to do things that they dont want to do in order to keep all of the other safe. In this case the man had to choose between shooting the crazy elephant or have the elephant hurt the town people. Its the same with the war, we have men and women over seas doing things they may not like in order to keep everyone back home safe. No one likes to be the bad guy/girl but someone has to do the dirty work or even worse things could happen.
Athena, so beautiful and gracious jumped to her feet,
I also really liked this interpretation of the Odessey, it is VERY easy to read and understand... Of course you all know that simplicity and I are friends. The interpretation is not in poem form but in more of a story/paragraph form which is easy reading. http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0451527364/ref=sib_dp_pt/102-3402569-2130567#reader-link
These are the two translations of the Odessey that i choose to look at
